  • Celebrities In Flight

There is an interesting dynamic with celebrities and private aircraft that extends into the economics and mentality of Hollywood.  Everyone in Hollywood wants to appear super-rich and super-successful while living the most luxurious of lifestyles.  Actors, musicians, and sports stars all want to be put on a veneer of having made it, when the truth is that the lifestyle of mansions, limos, and private jets belongs to a very few celebs.  The even sadder truth is because having it all is the ethos of Hollywood that many of those attain the accoutrements of the super-successful often cannot maintain them.  Having staff to attend to mundane tasks takes reoccurring revenue and as a celebs times passes, those excesses begin to drain the capital reserves quickly.

So, in Hollywood many celebrities will have the studios fly them to events or locations via private jet.  Failing that they will opt for flying first-class.  There have been stories of actors trying to sneak into first-class and being shown the way to their coach seat.  Few who buy a private plane can maintain it, as it is expensive.  John Travolta invests in owning a private jet  (huge jet at that) but that is his hobby, he would make it a point to maintain a reserve of money to cover his expenses.  Plus, he has reached the place he could afford to keep it.  Others take jet charters.  Helen Hunt after 9/11 was stranded in New England, unable to fly commercial as all flights were grounded.  As soon as the skyways were opened again, she chartered a jet for her and her staff to get home.  But even chartering a jet is an expense that is hard to maintain if one travels much.  Regardless of jet ownership, jet charter, or flying first-class, keeping up appearances is expensive for celebrities to maintain.

  • Native Actors Doing Something Besides Stereotypes

I have been writing of late about Native American actors in non-traditional Native roles.  You can see a couple of samples here and here.  Roles that do not have Indians in Westerns or do not have Native actors talking about vision quests.  A couple of the actors who have broken out are listed below:

    Wes Studi

Wes Studi has been in plenty of traditional Native roles in films like Dances With Wolves and Geronimo.  Indeed, he played the title character in Geronimo.  But even with that credentialing he has had roles that did not speak of him being Native.  He played in the series Kings and in the movie Heat with Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro. As mentioned in other areas my favorite was an action big monster movie called Deep Rising.

    Adam Beach

Adam Beach had a long running role on the television series Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.  His character Chester Lake referenced a Native upbringing but did not go over the top.  The behind the scenes guys were nice enough not to have him portrayed in traditional stereotypes like long hair or wearing turquoise.

The list could continue but you can see the idea.  It is just good to have Native actors doing something than stereotypes.

  • Make A Movie Cheap Part 2

If today’s film maker would only decide from the outset to make money, they could do amazing things.  Truly break new ground. Consider the film The Underground Comedy Movie, a film by Vince Offer from Shamwow and SlapChop fame.  Before his direct to market success he made this film and was finally able to sell 100,000 units @ $10 a piece via late night infomercials.  That is a million dollar gross.  Or consider American Movie star Mark Borchardt who used his fame to sell his short film Coven to fund his decades long feature project Northwestern.  Ok, both examples may be a bit far as these two guys are quite colorful.  Still, thinking about the making of money can have positive consequences.

Roger Corman thought profit all along and look at his list of careers impacted.  He is credited with starting careers like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard,  Jonathan Demme,  James Cameron, Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern,  Dennis Hopper, Talia Shire, Robert De Niro, and David Carradine.

  • Make A Movie Cheap Part 1

Roger Corman is a movie business visionary that should be emulated today.  What he did in his day is amazing, and what could be done today is staggering.  Yet, few follow his path of making a movie to make a profit.  Instead, everyone want to “make it” or get their “break into films.”  With digital photography, Internet marketing, and home video options, the ability to make money in movie has never been wider.

Still, aspiring film makers want to make films I guess for each other and show them on the film festival circuit.  Then maybe one in a thousand gets picked for major release by a studio.  This to them is making it in the film industry, problem is the same with actors, writers, directors, etc. - making it big only lasts a awhile.  Then the money and buzz goes away and it is time to do it again, and again.

  • Favorite Reality Shows Now Gone

Just wanted to review quickly some favorite reality shows that are now gone.  The shows were focused in Las Vegas and were not of the situational, competitive variety like Survivor or Big Brother.  Rather these were just good voyeurism into exciting careers and situations.

    American Casino and The Casino
American Casino followed a casino crew in Las Vegas around Green Valley Ranch, a casino outside of the Las Vegas Strip.  The Casino followed a pair of new owners of the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas.  Both were fun shows with interesting staff personalities and of course over the top guests of the casinos.  Both gave a decent behind the scenes and a look at the industry of casinos.

    King Of Cars
Chop is a Las Vegas car dealer, and for him flamboyance is an understatement.  He produces a frequent car show touting his car prices with his salesmen in costume and character.  But with flamboyance aside, Chop is still a businessman and his cast of characters still car salesmen.  This is the first show I can think of that not only highlighted a small business but also sales.
