I have been writing of late about Native American actors in non-traditional Native roles. You can see a couple of samples
here and
here. Roles that do not have Indians in Westerns or do not have Native actors talking about vision quests. A couple of the actors who have broken out are listed below:
Wes StudiWes Studi has been in plenty of traditional Native roles in films like Dances With Wolves and Geronimo. Indeed, he played the title character in Geronimo. But even with that credentialing he has had roles that did not speak of him being Native. He played in the series Kings and in the movie Heat with Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro. As mentioned in other areas my favorite was an action big monster movie called Deep Rising.
Adam BeachAdam Beach had a long running role on the television series Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. His character Chester Lake referenced a Native upbringing but did not go over the top. The behind the scenes guys were nice enough not to have him portrayed in traditional stereotypes like long hair or wearing turquoise.
The list could continue but you can see the idea. It is just good to have Native actors doing something than stereotypes.
